The Russian Foreign Ministry’s recent announcement, which restricts access to the websites of several Western publications within its territory, including Propastop’s website, is a significant recognition of Propastop’s years of work.
Last June, the Propastop blog was awarded the European Citizen’s Prize for exposing misinformation.
In addition to Propastop, major and influential media channels from Estonia, such as Delfi and ERR, are also included in this distinguished list. (Postimees and the Russian-language portal of ERR were already blocked in 2022.)
The Kremlin’s blacklist includes publications from 25 countries and four pan-European outlets. Among others, it blocks German publications Zeit, Spiegel, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Spain’s El País, Italy’s la Repubblica, Finland’s broadcaster Yle and newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, France’s Le Monde and news agency AFP, and the USA’s Politico.
The Russian Foreign Ministry cites the sanctions as a countermeasure to the European Union’s recent decision to ban any form of information dissemination within the EU by three Russian media channels: the news agency RIA Novosti, and the newspapers Izvestija and Rossiiskaja Gazeta.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Western media channels on the blacklist have “systematically spread unreliable information about the progress of the military operation” (in Ukraine).
