Russian disinformation can take root, casting shadows over even the most positive endeavours. StopFake reports that Romania’s A7 highway project, which aims to enhance economic ties with Ukraine, has become a victim of false narratives, falsely alleging military intentions.
Disinformation, fueled by Kremlin propaganda and disseminated through Z-channels on Telegram and pro-Russian Facebook groups, intensified following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The misinformation falsely suggests Romania’s alleged plot to seize Ukrainian territory through the A7 highway project, designed to connect Ukraine to almost Bucharest.
However, reality paints a different picture. Romania, echoing its neighbors, harbors no territorial claims against Ukraine. Romanian leaders consistently voice support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, emphasizing their commitment to respecting internationally recognized borders. The Information and Consulting Center “Center for Transport Strategies” (CTS) highlights the Autostrada Moldovei project’s significance in addressing long-standing infrastructure needs and boosting economic development in Romania’s eastern regions.
Since 2014, a disinformation campaign orchestrated by the Kremlin has falsely claimed that Ukraine’s allies, including Romania, are planning to divide the country. Such narratives, including assertions like “Fake: Romania, Hungary, and Poland will ‘take away the territory of Ukraine,'” “Fake: Ukraine is a ‘historically artificial state,'” and “Kremlin media fake: Zelenskyy is ready to unite Ukraine with Poland” aim to breed distrust among Ukrainians towards their neighbors. Previously, StopFake debunked misinformation that troops from NATO were allegedly concentrating in Romania for the “absorption of Bukovina, Odessa, and Moldova.”
Contrary to these false narratives, the A7 highway aligns with Romania’s strategic goals, connecting the Black Sea with Ukrainian and Polish road networks. The Pascani-Siret section, linking the highway to Ukraine, is in the design stage. While the project’s primary focus isn’t to provide an alternative route for Ukraine amidst border challenges, analysts suggest it could offer an additional export route, particularly to the port of Constanta.
Romania’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity stands firm. Despite the disinformation swirling around, the truth remains clear: the A7 highway project is a collaborative effort aimed at fostering economic growth and connectivity between Romania and Ukraine.
